Rosalie Girl's red wool dress with herringbone peter pan collar
The Todlem Rosalie is a crimson wool dress for girls, collared in black-and-white herringbone tweed and fastened at the back with a concealed zip. It is named for the amaranth, the flower that holds this exact red.
Six covered buttons in the same herringbone run in two rows down the front, purely for the look of them. The bodice sits close through the shoulder and drops to a low waist marked with small tabs, where the skirt breaks into deep box pleats. It is lined throughout in plum.
The wool-blend suiting is substantial enough to hold a pleat through a long day, the reason the skirt keeps its shape rather than collapsing by evening. The herringbone against the crimson is what gives the dress its slightly old-fashioned character.
Wear it to Eid lunches, birthdays and Christmas gatherings. In Pakistan it carries the cold months; in Dubai it suits air-conditioned interiors and the winter season. Made slowly, in small numbers, the kind of dress that is worn, loved and eventually passed on.
